Article XXII. Of Purgatory

The Romish Doctrine concerning Purgatory, Pardons, Worshipping, and Adoration, as well of Images as of Reliques, and also invocation of Saints, is a fond thing vainly invented, and grounded upon no warranty of Scripture, but rather repugnant to the Word of God.

Answ. The consent of Nations may take place in Natural Things, bur nor in Spiritual.

Odbj. 2. There is mention made of the Fire of Purgatory, 1 Cor, 3. Io, &c.

Answ. Either the Fire of Tribulation and Trial is there understood, and so it means not a real, buc imaginary syee : Or elle [_ The Fire shal try, ] that is, the Spirit of God thall search and exa:nine every ones Work, as a SanCtitier, Others underltand this place of the ConJagration of the World, and the ic» vere Judginen: of God.

Obj. 3. There is in the C/urch an infinite treasure of Satisfattions from the Sufferings of Christ, that can never bs exhausted : To this Treasure belong likewise the Passions of the Blios= sed Virgin, and other Saints, wo have suffered more than their Sins require. Now the P.istors of the Church, out of this inexvaustible-Treasure, have Authority to dispense, and grant Indulzen cies to those who aie guilty of surfering Tem par al Punisbment. D 2 Ansv.

F2 A Defence of the Answ. The Satisfaction of Christ is not ap- plied by Parts, but whally ro/all and every of the Faithtul, neither 1s there any thing here

superfluous. And-then as for the Blessed Vir- ’ Bin, and other Saints, they have not done any good thing, or suffered ‘any thing, which was not before a Debr. A Creature ought both ro do and suffer the grearest things for God’s Glory; because whatever they do and suffer, they will be abundantly rewarded for it, and therefore it caunor be fatisfa&tory for others : Besides this Authority of dispensing any thing at Will, was never granted to the Pastors of the Church.

Obj. 4. Images are capable of Infury and Contempt ; and so consequently of Honour and Forship. | |

Answ. This Argument may be allowed to have a sound and wholsome meaning, pro- vided we do not understand it of a Religious Woritp.

Obj. 5. ti Bodies of the Saints are the

Temples of the Holy Ghost, and for that reason are to be worshiped.

Answ. The Bodies of the Saints are to be honoured with a lawful Honour, bur are not to be worshiped with Religions Worship.

Obj. 6. There are Intercessor 5 usually appornte | ed for these that would ash ny thing of a King ; |

and therefore much more ought those who come to God to make use of such ; since he 1s at a greater distance in his Nature from Men, and superior to tem,
