Bobbio Missal: Roman Mass for Daily Use (Gallican) (c. 700)

English translation by AnglicanGuide from the Latin. Read the Latin edition. Words in [brackets] are supplied or summarise omitted matter.

The "Missa Romensis cotidiana" of the Bobbio Missal (Paris, BnF lat. 13246, c. 700): the Roman canon received into a Gallican book, framed by Gallican-named prayers (Collect, After the Names, At the Peace, Contestatio) and followed by a post-communion, a "Consummation of the Mass", a hymn "after the Hagios" and the Gloria. The Communicantes adds Gallic and Latin doctors (Hilary, Martin, Ambrose, Augustine, Gregory, Jerome, Benedict); there is no fixed dialogue before the preface. Lowe's Merovingian Latin is often corrupt; doubtful places follow the Roman canon. English translation by AnglicanGuide; Scripture and psalm verses in Prayer Book or King James wording.

Missa Romensis Cotidiana (Bobbio Missal)

The Collects and Prayers before the Canon

¶ The Roman Mass for daily use.

O God, who didst give to thy blessed Apostle Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and the office of binding and loosing: graciously receive our prayers, and at his intercession, we beseech thee, O Lord, grant us thy help, that we may be set free from the bonds of our sins.

¶ The Collect.

O God, who art offended by sin and appeased by penitence: regard the groans of thy people that make supplication unto thee, and mercifully turn away the evils which thou justly bringest upon us.

¶ After the names.

Sanctify, O Lord, the gifts offered, and cleanse us from the stains of our sins.

¶ At the Peace.

May this oblation of thy people be pleasing unto thee, O Lord, which we offer unto thee in honour of thy Name; and may it profit all unto salvation.

The Contestatio (Preface) and Sanctus

¶ The Contestatio.

It is very meet and right, just and availing unto salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, through Christ our Lord: through whom the Angels praise thy majesty, the Dominions adore, the Powers tremble; the heavens and the heavenly Hosts and the blessed Seraphim celebrate it together with united exultation. With whom we pray thee bid our voices also be admitted, saying with lowly confession:

Holy, holy, holy.

The Canon of the Action

Therefore, most merciful Father, we humbly pray and beseech thee, through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, that thou wouldest accept and bless + these gifts, + these offerings, + these holy and unblemished sacrifices; which we offer unto thee, first, for thy holy catholic Church, that thou wouldest vouchsafe to give it peace, to keep, unite and govern it throughout the whole world; together with thy most devoted servant N., our Pope of the apostolic see, and our bishop, and all the orthodox.

Remember, O Lord, thy servants and handmaids, N. and N., and all here standing round, whose faith is known and devotion noted unto thee; who offer unto thee, this sacrifice of praise for themselves and all theirs, for the redemption of their souls, for the hope of their salvation and safety, and pay their vows unto thee, the eternal God, living and true.

In communion with,

¶ At Christmas: and celebrating the most holy day on which the undefiled virginity brought forth to this world the Saviour, Jesus Christ our Lord;

¶ At Easter: and celebrating the most holy day of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ thy Son;

and venerating the memory, first, of the glorious ever-virgin Mary, Mother of our God and Lord Jesus Christ; and also of thy most blessed Apostles and Martyrs, Peter, Paul, Andrew, James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon and Thaddeus, Linus, Cletus, Clement, Sixtus, Cornelius, Cyprian, Laurence, Chrysogonus, John and Paul, Cosmas and Damian, Hilary, Martin, Ambrose, Augustine, Gregory, Jerome, Benedict, and of all thy Saints who throughout the whole world have suffered for thy Name, O Lord, and of thy Confessors: by whose merits and prayers grant that in all things we may be defended by the help of thy protection; through Christ our Lord.

This oblation therefore of our service, and of all thy household, which we offer unto thee in honour of thy Name, O God, we beseech thee, O Lord, graciously to accept; and to order our days in thy peace, and bid us be delivered from eternal damnation and numbered in the flock of thine elect; through Christ our Lord.

Which oblation do thou, O God, we beseech thee, vouchsafe to make in all things blessed +, approved +, ratified +, reasonable and acceptable; that it may become for us the Body + and Blood + of thy most dearly beloved Son, our Lord God Jesus Christ.

Who the day before he suffered took bread into his holy and venerable hands, and with eyes lifted up to heaven unto thee, God, his almighty Father, giving thanks to thee, he bles+sed, brake, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat ye all of this: for this is my Body.

Likewise after supper, taking also this excellent cup into his holy and venerable hands, again giving thanks to thee, he blessed it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and drink ye all of it: for this is the cup of my holy Blood, of the new and everlasting testament, the mystery of faith, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins. As often as ye shall do these things, ye shall do them in remembrance of me.

Wherefore, O Lord, we thy servants, and thy holy people also, mindful of the blessed passion of the same Christ thy Son our Lord, and of his resurrection from the dead, and of his glorious ascension into heaven, offer unto thine excellent majesty, of thine own gifts and bounty, a pure + victim, a holy + victim, a spotless + victim, the holy Bread of eternal life and the Cup of everlasting salvation.

Upon which vouchsafe to look with a favourable and gracious countenance, and to accept them, as thou didst vouchsafe to accept the gifts of thy righteous servant Abel, and the sacrifice of our patriarch Abraham, and that which thy high priest Melchisedech offered unto thee, a holy sacrifice, a spotless victim.

We humbly beseech thee, almighty God, command these to be carried by the hands of thy holy Angel to thine altar on high, in the sight of thy divine majesty; that as many of us as shall receive the most sacred Body and Blood of thy Son by this partaking of this altar may be filled with all heavenly blessing and grace; through the same Christ.

Remember also, O Lord, the names of those who have gone before us with the sign of faith, and sleep in the sleep of peace.

¶ The commemoration of the dead.

To them and to all that rest in Christ, grant, we beseech thee, a place of refreshment, light and peace; through Christ our Lord.

To us sinners also, thy servants, who hope in the multitude of thy mercies, vouchsafe to grant some part and fellowship with thy holy Apostles and Martyrs: with John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicity, Perpetua, Agatha, Agnes, Cecilia, Felicity, Anastasia, Agatha, Lucy, Eugenia, and with all thy Saints; into whose company admit us, we beseech thee, not weighing our merit but granting pardon; through Christ our Lord.

Through whom, O Lord, thou dost ever create, sanctify +, quicken +, bless +, and bestow upon us all these good things. Through him, and with him, and in him, be unto thee, God the Father almighty, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory, world without end.

The Lord's Prayer and the Embolism

¶ A corrector adds: Let us pray. Admonished by saving precepts, and formed by divine instruction, we are bold to say:

Taught by the divine teaching, and by the divine instruction, we are bold to say: Our Father.

¶ After the Lord's Prayer.

Deliver us, O Lord, we beseech thee, from all evil, past, present and to come; and at the intercession of the blessed and glorious ever-virgin Mary, Mother of God, and of thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, graciously give thy peace in our days; that, aided by the help of thy mercy, we may be ever free from sin and safe from all disquiet.

After Communion, the Consummation, and the Gloria

¶ After Communion.

O Lord, who hast filled us with thy heavenly gift: grant, we beseech thee, that we may be cleansed from our secret faults and delivered from the snares of our enemies.

¶ The Consummation of the Mass.

We give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, who hast filled us with the communion of the Body and Blood of Christ thy Son; and we humbly beg thy mercy, that this thy Sacrament, O Lord, may not be to us a guilt unto punishment, but a saving intercession unto pardon. May it be the washing away of sins, the strength of the weak, a bulwark against the perils of the world; may this communion, O Lord, purge us from sin and make us partakers of heavenly joy; through.

¶ Said after the Hagios.

Thou, most high God, Hagios, the Holy One, almighty Lord of hosts, who camest from on high to suffer for us: have mercy upon us. Thou glorious Father of threefold power, who adornest the walls of the most excellent Jerusalem with divine stones, and paintest its armies with the blood of the saints: deliver us by thy mighty arm, save us by thy helping right hand, and defend in us the price of thy precious blood, which thou hast redeemed; through.

¶ The Gloria, to be sung at Mass.

Glory to God on high, and on earth peace to men of good will. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only art most high, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
