Article XVIII. Of obtaining eternal Salvation only by the Name of Christ

For holy Scripture doth set out unto us only the Name of Jesus Christ, whereby men must be saved.

Obj.3.God does not require at our Hands things impossible ; but it is impossible that they who have never heard of Christ, should relie upon or believe in him. |

Obj…4. Christ zold the Pharisces, John 9. 41. If ye were blind, ye would nor have Sin : And then told his Disciples concerning the Fews, John 15-22. If 1 had nor come and spoke wnto them, they had nor had Sin : So that’in these places he gives us sufficiently to understand, that simple Ignorance ought not to be imputed to any one : Of which see hore in Article VIII.

Anfsw, This is Christ’s meaning ; either rthar if he had not come ro the Pharitees ar all, it they had nor read the Scriprures, and seen his Miracles, which confirmed him ro be the Mef- fiah. Or if they had been blind in their Opi- mon, and had fought for furcher Light from him, they had nor had the Sin of Infidelity : Bur notwithstanding this, because of: their 0+ ther Impieties, without a Saviour, they. could not elcape Damnation.
