The Visitation of the Sick
The Common Prayer for the Sick
The common prayer for a sick man begins.
Let us pray, dearly beloved brethren, for the spirit of our dear N., who according to the flesh suffereth sickness, that the Lord may grant him relief of his pains, give him life, and bestow on him the protection of health and the reward of good works. Through our Lord.
The common preface begins.
Let us pray, dearly beloved brethren, for our brother N., who is troubled by the infirmity of the flesh and by sickness, that the goodness of the Lord may vouchsafe to visit and strengthen him by the angel of heavenly medicine. Through our Lord.
[A leaf is lost here.] … Father almighty, and preserve this thy servant N., whom thou hast sanctified and redeemed with the great price of thy holy blood, world without end.
The Blessing of Water and of the Man
The blessing over the water.
Let us pray and entreat the mercy of the Lord, that he vouchsafe to bless and sanctify this fountain with the heavenly Spirit. Through our Lord.
The blessing of the man.
The Lord bless thee and keep thee; the Lord make his face to shine upon thee, and be merciful unto thee; and the Lord turn his countenance unto thee, and give thee peace and health.
Have mercy upon us, O Lord God.
The Anointing and the Creed
Then he anoints him with oil.
I anoint thee with the oil of sanctification, in the name of God the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, that thou mayest be saved in the name of the holy Trinity.
At the same time he sings: I believe in God the Father.
Then he is told to forgive all things.
The Lord's Prayer
The collect of the Lord's Prayer.
O God, Creator of all natures, and Father of all origins in heaven and in earth, receive these devout prayers of thy trembling people from that throne of thine of unapproachable light; and, amid the unwearied praises of the cherubim and seraphim that stand around, hear these prayers of unwavering hope.
Our Father.
The collect now follows.
Deliver us from evil, O Lord Christ Jesus, and keep us in every good work, author of all good things, abiding and reigning for ever and ever. Amen.
The Communion
Then he is refreshed with the Body and Blood.
The Body with the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ be health to thee unto life eternal.
A prayer after receiving the eucharist.
Guard within us, O Lord, the gift of thy glory, that against all the evils of this present world we may be defended by the strength of the eucharist which we receive. Through our Lord.
Alleluia.
And let them offer the sacrifice of praise, and declare his works with rejoicing. Alleluia.
I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord.
Refreshed with the Body and Blood of Christ, may we ever say unto thee, O Lord, Alleluia.
O praise the Lord, all ye nations.
Glory be to the Father.
Offer the sacrifice of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord.
O God, we give thee thanks, through whom we have celebrated the holy mysteries, and of thee we ask the gifts of holiness; through our Lord Jesus Christ thy Son, to whom be glory for ever and ever.
