The Visitation of the Sick
The Canon on Anointing and Viaticum
[From the canons (Excerptiones) prefixed to the Pontifical:] … That all priests diligently judge worthy penance for all who confess their crimes to them, and that to all the sick before the end of life the viaticum and communion of the Body of Christ be mercifully given. That, according to the definition of the holy fathers, if any be sick, he be diligently anointed by the priests with hallowed oil, with prayers.
The Blessing over a Sick Man
A blessing over a sick man.
Almighty God visit this sick man, heal the ailing, strengthen the weak, and make the strong stronger, and raise him up to the heavenly kingdom. [Amen.]
Hear him that prayeth, draw back him that falleth, deliver him that strayeth, direct him that is negligent, and grant charity to this sick man.
Mayest thou deliver him from divers sicknesses, from earthly desires, from the jaws of the devil and of hell. Amen.
Heal, O Lord, physician of all, the torments of his fevers and of his manifold sicknesses and his ailment, and loose the pains of all his griefs. Amen.
Heal his inward parts on earth; by thy medicine empty out his corruptions, heal his scars, renew the substance of his flesh and blood. Amen.
Which may he vouchsafe [to grant], who in perfect Trinity is glorified through all ages. Amen.
The Blessing of Bread for the Sick
The blessing of bread for a sick man.
O God, who callest back the wanderers and savest the penitent, who givest healing to the sick and the crown of glory to them that persevere in good, who with five loaves and two fishes didst satisfy five thousand men that hoped in thy mercy; vouchsafe to bless and sanctify this bread, that whosoever shall take of it may receive health of body and protection of soul. Through thee, Jesus Christ.
